UP Police has detained seven people, including two sons of jailed gangster Atiq Ahmed, for allegedly killing the prime witness of BSP MLA Raju Pal’s murder over election rivalry in 2005, in a shootout in Prayagraj on Friday evening.

Umesh Pal, the prime witness, died while his two police gunners received serious bullet injuries and were stated to be in a critical state.

Raju Pal was murdered after he defeated Atiq’s brother Ashraf from Allahabad (West) Assembly seat in the 2005 Assembly elections. Atiq is accused in the sensational murder case.

He was returning in a car after appearing before the Allahabad High Court in the legislator’s murder case on Friday evening. When he got down from the car near his house in the Dhumanganj area, Ahmed’s two sons – Guddu Muslim and Ghulam and some of their accomplices – allegedly fired multiple shots at Umesh and security guards around 5 pm.

Footage from a CCTV camera installed at the spot shows a group of people firing at Umesh and hurling bombs, creating mayhem in the bustling area.

Umesh and two security guards were rushed to a hospital where he and one of the guards were declared dead while another is battling for life, according to the FIR lodged with Dhumanganj Police.

In her FIR, Umesh’s wife Jaya Pal blamed Atiq Ahmed, his wife Sahista Parveen, jailed brother Ashraf, his sons Guddu and Ghulam and their unknown accomplices for the murder.

A case has been registered against them under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Acting swiftly, UP Police detained Atiq’s sons Guddu and Ghulam along with some of their aides following a raid at his residence.

Raju Pal was allegedly murdered in broad daylight in Prayagraj three months after he defeated Ashraf. Initially, UP Police investigated the case, but it was taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 20016.

Atiq, a five-time MLA from Allahabad (West), is currently lodged in Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat. He was elected an MP from the Phulpur seat on the Samajwadi Party ticket in 2004.

He won Allahabad (West) as an independent three times, and two times as a candidate of the Samajwadi Party and Apna Dal.

Atiq faces a long list of cases in Uttar Pradesh in crimes like extortion, murder, dacoity, intimidation etc.
