India’s top pharma man Dr Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi is new DCGI

Former Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) secretary-cum-scientific Dr Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi has been appointed the new Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI).

His appointment was approved by the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi following a recommendation by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) last month.

Dr Raghuvanshi will succeed Dr PB N Prasad who was appointed an interim DCGI on February 15.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal for appointment of Dr Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi, secretary-cum-scientific director, Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission, to the post of Drugs Controller (India), Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO),” the government said in an order.

Born and raised in Varanasi, Dr Raghuvanshi did his bachelor’s and master’s from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He completed his PhD the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi and worked there for seven years.

Dr Raghuvanshi is an experience holder in various private pharmaceutical companies in India.

He has also worked at India’s leading multinational pharmaceutical company Ranbaxy for 12 years. After leaving Ranbaxy, he joined Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd and contributed to scientific research and drug development for 11 years.

Before him, Dr VG Somani served as a permanent DCGI for around four years.

Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), under which DCGI works, is responsible for the approval of licences of specified categories of drugs such as blood and blood products, IV fluids, vaccines, and sera in India.
