Under attack from the BJP over US billionaire George Soros’ controversial remark on a “democratic revival”, Congress on Friday said that only Congress and the Opposition can usher in a regime change in India and not any external power.
On Thursday, the self-proclaimed messiah of open societies, George Soros – who is notorious for bringing down the Bank of Thailand and the Bank of England – said that the woes of Gautam Adani would open the door to a democratic revival in India.
The ruling BJP was quick to lap up the opportunity to launch an attack on Soros for trying to destabilise the Indian economy and alleged Congress’ links with the businessman.
Even as the BJP pressed its senior leaders into action, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh invoked Nehruvian legacy to underline its strong opposition to attempts of meddling in Indian elections.
“Whether the PM-linked Adani scam sparks a democratic revival in India depends entirely on the Congress, Opposition parties and our electoral process,” tweeted Ramesh, who serves as Congress general Secretary (communication in-charge).

“It has nothing to do with George Soros. Our Nehruvian legacy ensures people like Soros cannot determine our electoral outcomes,” he said.
In a speech on Thursday, the 92-year-old billionaire said that Prime Minister Modi would “have to answer questions” from foreign investors and parliament on allegations of fraud and stock manipulation at Adani’s industrial empire, noting that Modi had been “silent” on the topic.
Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Soros accused the Prime Minister of being complicit in the supposed ‘misdealings’ of the Adani Group.
“Modi is silent on the subject, but he will have to answer questions from foreign investors and in parliament,” Soros said.
He also claimed that the ‘shakedown’ caused to the Indian markets due to the damning report by US-based Hindenburg Research against Adani will result in “much needed institutional reforms” and “democratic revival”.
He also alleged that anti-Muslim violence in India has spearheaded the “meteoric rise” of Prime Minister Modi.
The Adani Group has come under fierce scrutiny since the US short seller accused it of engaging in “brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud” over decades.
Since the report came out in the last week of January, Congress has been demanding a high-level investigation against the Adani Group and stalled parliamentary proceedings to press for a debate on allegations against the conglomerate.
