BCCI medical team clears Iyer, who was undergoing rehabilitation
After dominating the Australians in the opening Test of the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur, India will add more muscle to its batting for the second Test in New Delhi.
Shreyas Iyer will join the Indian squad after completing his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy following a back injury. The second Test will begin on February 17.
“India batter Shreyas Iyer has successfully completed his rehab at the National Cricket Academy following his back injury and has been cleared by the BCCI Medical Team,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.
“Shreyas will join the squad in New Delhi ahead of the second Test of the Mastercard Australia tour of India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” he added.
Iyer last played in the two-match Test series in Bangladesh, where he scored two important half-centuries. However, the 28-year-old suffered swelling in the lower back that forced him to miss the home ODI series against New Zealand.
Iyer was supposed to join the team at Nagpur for the preparatory camp. But his rehabilitation was extended. In his absence, India handed Suryakumar Yadav the debut after his sizzling form in the shortest format of the game.
While Yadav did not exactly set the ground on fire in Whites, it will be interesting to see if the team management gets Iyer back into the playing XI as he is considered a key batter on turning tracks. The management might also mull giving Yadav another opportunity while Iyer settles down. The team management also has an in-form Shubman Gill to consider.
Since making his debut in November 2021 against New Zealand in Kanpur, Iyer has played seven Test matches for India. He scored 624 runs at an impressive average of 56.72 and a strike rate of 65.13.
Incidentally, Iyer’s highest Test score, 105, came in the very first innings of his debut Test.
India’s squad for the second Test: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Suryakumar Yadav.
