THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pope Francis at Vatican has got an overwhelming response from Christian community in the country, Kerala largely from Kerala.

Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) has hailed prime minister’s invitation for Papal visit to India as a ‘historic decision’.

The invitation will bring the first papal visit after 1999, when the then Pope, John Paul II, reached the country.

“Its a noble and laudable gesture to invite the Pope to the country. The people of India look towards the Roman Pontiff as an advocate and bold spokesperson of morality and humanitarian values,” KCBC president Cardinal Mar George Alencherry told The New Indian.

“The Papal visit will also promote fraternity and co-operation among the polyphonic society of India,” the Cardinal said.

The meeting between the PM and the Pope and upcoming visit will embark further advancement of mutual trust among people belonging to various religious beliefs”.

“At a time when religious intolerance is on a rise, a meeting between the prime minister of the largest democratic country and the Pope, who stands for humanity and peace, gives a new hope to the world,” said Aboon Mor Baselios Thomas I, the Catholicos of the Jacobite Syrian Church.

Archbishop Joseph Kalathiparambil of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Verapoly also said that meeting with the Pope is a moment of jubilation not just for the Christians of this country.
