Flamboyant TMC lawmaker Mahua Moitra, best known for her fiery speeches in the parliament, was on the receiving end of netizens for using a derogatory word for a fellow BJP member on Tuesday.

Mahua was enraged over disruptions by some members of the treasury bench to her speech during the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha.

In her speech, Mahua – who represents the Krishnanagar parliamentary constituency of West Bengal – raised some pointed questions against the Adani Group in wake of a recent damning report published by a US-based short-seller.

As per the proceedings of the House aired on television, Mahua’s speech was disrupted by intermittent interventions by some members, prompting her to plead to the chair, “Will you stop him, Sir?”

After the intervention of acting Speaker Bhrithari Mahtab, she finished her speech and another MP started speaking. Meanwhile, an argument broke out between her and another MP, who was not visible on the TV camera.

As the argument escalated, Mahua used the ‘H**ami” (scoundrel) word for a fellow parliamentarian, sending even her Opposition colleagues in shock. A commotion ensured as BJP MPs raised slogans and demanded an apology.

According to reports, acting speaker Mahtab, visibly upset, took off his headphone and ordered the removal of the objection part from the proceedings of the House.

Calling her remark “indecent” and “aggressive”, the chair reportedly asked the parliamentary affairs minister to approach Mahua’s party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was quick to launch an offensive against the TMC MP, who is said to have turned an eyesore for party chief Mamata Banerjee and senior party leaders.

“Serial offender Mahua Moitra crosses the line – uses abusive language inside Parliament! Earlier she has abused a journalist with an offensive gesture, insulted Maa Kaali, attacked Brahmins with “Chotiwala Rakshas” jibe,” charged BJP’s national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla.

“Will TMC still defend her? Or will it condemn & act on her?” he asked.

This is not the first time that Mahua has been caught in the eye of the storm.

In 2015, four years before her election as an MP, Mahua showed her middle finger – considered abusive, disrespectful and offensive across the world – to a news anchor on national television on the air.

In December 2020, she described the media fraternity in West Bengal as “worth two paise”. “Who has called ‘’du poisar’’ press (two paisa worth) here? Do remove these elements from the venue. Some of our party members invite such people to closed-door meetings to see their faces on TV,” the Krishnanagar MP was heard saying at a party meeting.

As per various reports, she is getting extremely unpopular in her parliamentary constituency as well as in the party organization for allegedly promoting factionalism, and putting the TMC in a tight spot with her tweets.
