India dispatches relief assistance to earthquake-hit Turkey

Search & rescue teams, medical teams along with relief materials will be dispatched to Turkey in coordination with the Government of the Republic of Türkiye, said the PMO statement.

Two teams of NDRF comprising 100 personnel with specially trained dog squads and necessary equipment are ready to be flown to the earthquake-hit area for search & rescue operations. Medical teams are also being readied with trained doctors and paramedics with essential medicines.

Relief material will be dispatched in coordination with the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and Indian Embassy in Ankara, and the Consulate General office in Istanbul.

The meeting was attended by the Cabinet Secretary, representatives of Ministries of Home Affairs, NDMA, NDRF, Defence, MEA, Civil Aviation, and Health & Family Welfare.

On Monday PM Modi tweeted: “Anguished by the loss of lives and damage of property due to the Earthquake in Turkey. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. India stands in solidarity with the people of Turkey and is ready to offer all possible assistance to cope with this tragedy.”

On Monday a killer 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria killing at least 640 people as they slept. Buildings levelled and tremors were felt as far away as the island of Cyprus and Egypt.

According to Turkey’s AFAD emergency service centre, the first quake was of magnitude 7.4 which was followed by more than 40 aftershocks.

The US geological survey said, “The quake struck at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometers (11 miles) near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, which is home to around two million people.”

The earthquake has been termed the biggest earthquake in the history of the center, by the head of Syria’s National Earthquake Centre, Raed Ahmed.

Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who is preparing for elections on May 14 this year, conveyed his sympathies and urged for national unity.

“We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage,” the Turkish leader tweeted.
