A power outage plunges Pakistan into darkness. All major population hubs, including the megacities of Karachi and Lahore, were affected. More than 220 million people in Pakistan were affected.

On Monday, in the early hours after a major breakdown in the national grid caused a massive power outage in a bankrupt country .

The nationwide power outage, which occurred at 7.34 am local time, lasted for hours and was said to have lasted for over 12 hours. It impacted schools , hospitals and industrial units. Soon after the power breakdown , power outage was trending on social media.

Citizens blame the coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for the failure.  Pakistan Energy Minister Khurrum Dastgir said that the outage was caused by a large voltage surge.

Pakistan lacks #resources to run its oil-and-gas-powered plants. The Pakistani government had recently ordered measures to conserve energy, including closing all malls and markets by 8:30 pm, as the country grappled with a crippling power and economic crisis.
