LAKHIMPUR KHERI (UTTAR PRADESH): The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (CJM) on Monday sent accused Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister of Home, Ajay Mishra, to 3-day police remand in connection with the October 3, 2021, violence that claimed eight lives in Lakhimpur Kheri . The court on Sunday had sent him to 14-day judicial custody with the police today seeking custody of him for further interrogation.
Ashish was arrested by the Investigating Officer for “non co-operation” during questioning. He was grilled by a team of police officers led by Deputy Inspector General, Upendra Agrawal, for over 12 hours.
Ashish Mishra answered only 40 questions and was mostly evasive, sources told The New Indian. He was specifically asked about his presence on the fateful day. He kept repeating that he was at a Dangal (wrestling event) that was taking place in his native village, Banveer Pur. Senior officials tasked with the probe of the incident that has created a nationwide uproar said that they are collecting, circumstantial and corroborative evidence to build a tight case against the accused. They have roped in forensic experts to assist the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed on the orders of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
35-year-old Ashish Mishra, also known as Monu Bhaiyya, is in charge of his father’s political activities in his Kheri parliamentary constituency. He was served two summons by the police following which he appeared before the SIT on Saturday, backed by large number of supporters amid tight security.
The Supreme Court had on Friday questioned the non-arrest of the accused and said the law must take its course against all accused and the government must take all remedial steps in this regard to instill confidence in the probe of killing of eight people.
