Rohit Sharma returns for ODIs while Virat Kohli rests for T20Is
Amid rising speculations that he might soon become India’s skipper in the shorter formats of the game, Hardik Pandya was named as the skipper of the Indian team for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka at home.
The series will start on January 3. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma is set to return for the three ODIs that will be played after the T20Is.
Meanwhile, former India captain Virat Kohli has been rested for the T20I series. On the other hand, a poor run in Bangladesh saw Shikhar Dhawan lose his place in the ODI squad.
Rishabh Pant, who was given a break from the ODI series in Bangladesh, was not included in either the ODI or T20I teams. Pant, though, featured in the two-Test series against Bangladesh.
Pandya, who impressed everyone with his leadership during the Gujarat Titans’ IPL triumph in their debut season, also led India in the T20I series in New Zealand in November. The series was played just after the 2022 T20 World Cup with regular skipper Sharma being given a rest.
Sharma also suffered a thumb injury during the ODI series in Bangladesh earlier in December. The injury forced him to miss the two-Test series that followed.
As teams gear up for the ODI World Cup later in the year, India will start their home season by hosting Sri Lanka for three T20Is in Mumbai (January 3), Pune (January 5) and Rajkot (January 7).
Both teams will play three ODIs in Guwahati (January 10), Kolkata (January 12) and Thiruvananthapuram (January 15).
India will have a packed calendar as they will then host New Zealand and Australia before the start of the Indian Premier League.
