Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren instructed senior government officers to make preparations in advance to deal with any possible surge in Covid-19 cases, during a high-level meeting in Ranchi on Tuesday.

CM Soren took stock of the state’s preparedness to effectively tackle any health emergency caused by the BF.7 variant of Covid-19, which is wreaking havoc in neighbouring China.

In a slew of instructions, the chief minister asked officials to focus on a five-pronged strategy of test, track, treat, vaccination and adherence to COVID-appropriate behaviour.

He said that hospitals should be prepared with an adequate number of beds, including those equipped with oxygen supply. In addition, he also instructed the provision of medicines and oxygen cylinders.

The CM directed officials to maintain vigil at the state’s airports, railway stations, bus stops, and bordering areas.

“People in the state need not to panic about the Covid situation because the state government is fully prepared to deal with it,” said state health minister Banna Gupta after conducting a mock drill to check the readiness of hospitals.

At present, state government hospitals have a total of 19,535 beds, including 11,356 oxygen-supported beds available with it. The state has eight operational RT-PCR laboratories, and an additional 19 will be operational soon after receiving approval from the ICMR, said Soren.

Several countries, including China, the United States, and Japan, are experiencing an increase in COVID-19 infection, which is thought to be caused by the BF.7 strain.

According to health officials, there is currently only one active case of Covid-19 infection in the state.

Since the Covid outbreak in 2020, 4.42 lakh people contracted the infection in Jharkhand. Out of the total number, more than 4.37 lakh have recovered. According to the officials, a total of 5,331 people have died as a result of the infection to date.

According to the state’s health minister, 122 PSA oxygen-generating plants have been set up to supply oxygen to hospitals.

Even though no decision was made to make wearing masks and social distancing mandatory, CM Soren advised people to take precautionary measures for their own safety.

“We are conducting thermal scanning at places suggested by the chief minister. If any symptomatic individuals are discovered, they will be admitted to Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and treated,” said health minister Banna Gupta.
