Dr Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, newly appointed councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), filed their nominations for Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Monday.

Four other councillors from the party – Sarika Chaudhary, Raminder Kaur, Mohini Jeenwal and Aamil Malik – also filed their nominations for the MCD Standing Committee.

During an interview with The New Indian, Oberoi said that she will start working on the issues of cleaning and landfill. She had also said that the party was preparing a blueprint to remove three hills of garbage from Delhi.

The nominations were filed in the presence of AAP’s party spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj, MLA Durgesh Pathak, MLA Atishi and AAP Leader Adil Ahmed Khan.

“All of the nominations have been accepted, and on behalf of the party and all AAP supporters, and on behalf of Arvind Kejriwal, we wish the candidates all the best for their upcoming tasks in the MCD,” Bhardwaj said.

Durgesh Pathak said, “People dream to make Delhi a clean and glorious city, CM Arvind Kejriwal has a blueprint ready for MCD to fulfil this dream.”

The election for the appointment of the mayor and deputy mayor will be held on January 6, after which the house will be constituted for one year. The last date for filing the nomination is December 27.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which held a tight grip over the erstwhile three corporations, managed to secure only 104 seats, following the unification, after the results were declared on December 7. But they staked their claim for the post of mayor.
However, with 134 councillors in a 250-seat MCD, AAP forced the BJP to backtrack from their claim.

During the filing of nominations, AAP’s MCD in-charge, Pathak, said, “The people of Delhi dream to make Delhi a clean and glorious city. It is the capital of the country, the city needs to be transformed in such a way that people from all over the world see Delhi as a model capital.”

“Till today, their dream was incomplete. In the hope of fulfilling this dream, people have formed the government of the Aam Aadmi Party in the MCD,” he said.

“CM Arvind Kejriwal has made a complete blueprint of how this dream will be fulfilled. Today, our people have the responsibility of fulfilling the dream of the people of Delhi. I am sure that they will cooperate in fulfilling this dream by working day and night,” said Pathak.

Party’s Kalkaji MLA Atishi said, “Aam Aadmi Party has got majority in MCD. No other party is in this race (for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor).”

“The people of Delhi have given the responsibility of cleanliness to Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party. And now, Dr Shelly Oberoi will become the first Mayor of the unified MCD and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal will become the deputy mayor,” she said.
