Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday gave Rs 10 lakh each to the families of 53 journalists who died of COVID-19 and paid homage to their commitment to reporting on issues of public interest. In addition to this he also proposed a housing scheme for accredited journalists.
“We want to provide affordable houses for journalists. Journalists who are accredited, work for public interest and toil day and night irrespective of summer or winter to uphold democratic values should be given houses so that they do not have to depend on anyone. A team of editors can decide the eligibility criterion,” Adityanath said.
In a programme held at his residence Gorakhpur on Good Governance Day observed on the day of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday, Adityanath said that the manner in which journalists spread awareness and highlighted the loopholes in the system in a constructive way during a severe pandemic was praiseworthy.
Adityanath distributed Rs 5.30 crore in all to the families of 53 journalists who died during the pandemic. In July last year, families of 50 other journalists were provided an assistance of Rs 10 lakh each, the UP government said in a statement issued here.
Over 100 journalists in the state died because of being inflicted by Corona.
“Today every family is being given assistance of Rs 10 lakh as a support. Apart from this, pension will be provided to destitute women as per rules whereas aid will also be provided to destitute children under Mukhyamantri Bal Seva Yojana and PM Care Yojana,” he said.
