In a spine-chilling incident, a minor girl was brutally raped, her eye gauged out, wood thrust down her throat, and buried by her mother’s paramour in West Champaran district of Bihar, said police.

A man named Jitendra Yadav, said to be the paramour of the victim’s mother, has been arrested by the police. Local media reported that the girl had caught her mother with Yadav in a compromising position. However, the mother has refuted claims of her sexual relationship with the accused.

The family has also disputed the police version and named six men in the case.

A student of Class 6, the 12-year-old girl was buried in a 7×4 feet pit by the perpetrator in an attempt to destroy evidence.

According to police, Yadav has confessed to having kidnapped the girl, taken her to a riverside area, and strangled her single-handedly after rape. He dug up a pit on the bank of the Harha river and buried her body.

“On December 16, a missing person’s complaint was filed by the girl’s parents. They told the police that they named the six people who committed the murder. However, the investigation shows the role of a person named Jitendra Yadav. He has confessed to having committed the crime,” said Bagaha deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Kailash Prasad.

According to the police, Yadav decided to get rid of the girl when she threatened to tell her parents about the act. He told the police that he had illicit relations with the mother who worked on his farms. “Police have retrieved chats between the two,” said the officer.

In the family’s defence, the victim’s uncle said, “The place where the girl was raped is one km away from the place where she was buried. One man alone cannot lift and carry the dead body for this distance.”

The family has preserved the body, alleging that the accused is powerful and connected, and could influence the investigation. The cremation was carried out by burning an effigy instead of her body, her uncle informed.

“If he tries to influence the investigation, we will get the body examined,” a family member said.
