A Muslim man, accused of killing his Hindu girlfriend, was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police following an encounter in the Dubagga area of Lucknow on Friday.

According to the FIR, Sufiyan (22) pushed 19-year-old Nidhi Gupta from the fourth floor of an apartment building in Sector H of Basant Kunj in Lucknow on Tuesday, November 15.

The accused was allegedly forcing Nidhi, a beautician by profession, to convert to Islam and marry him. Both were residents of the same locality.

As Sufiyan continued to harass her, she went to Sufiyan’s home along with her parents on Tuesday night to confront him over the matter of continuous harassment and pressure to convert. The initial calm conversation soon turned into hearted arguments between the two parties.

In the meantime, Nidhi stepped out of the room and went to the roof. Sufiyan followed her and pushed her to the ground. She was rushed to a hospital by her family members but declared brought dead by doctors.

Soon after the incident, Sufiyan along with his family locked his home and fled the area.

Subsequently, Nidhi’s family lodged a complaint at Dubagga police station. The police launched an investigation and declared a reward of ₹25000 for providing information leading to his arrest.

In the FIR, Nidhi’s mother said that accused Sufiyan was harassing and pressuring her to marry him as per Islamic rituals.

Multiple police teams were constituted to nab the accused. Many of the teams reportedly also visited Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttarakhand.

During their search, cops noticed Sufiyan and in the ensuing encounter, he sustained an injury in his leg on Friday.

The matter took a political colour with Hindu organisations Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) staging demonstrations in Lucknow for speedy justice for Nidhi. They alleged that the murder was a fallout of love jihad.
