Congress leader and party campaign committee chairman Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday expressed confidence that Congress will return to power in Himachal Pradesh.

“On the day of polling, there was an excitement among the people of the state, which indicates that the ethos of democracy is still prevalent,” Sukhu said after casting his vote in Hamirpur’s Nadaun assembly area, from where he is also contesting the polls.

“The feeling with which people are coming out in large numbers to exercise their franchise is an indication for change because their feelings were not fulfilled,” said Sukhu, who is considered the frontrunner in the Congress for the position of chief minister.

“I can say that the Congress will form a government with a majority, and there are no ifs and buts in that. “The way people are concerned about unemployment, inflation, and other issues, and when they feel they are not being heard, they turn out in large numbers and vote for change,” he added.

Congress has retained Sukhu, who is the party’s former state chief and won the 2017 assembly election by defeating the BJP’s Vijay Agnihotri. Sukhu, incidentally, was defeated by Agnihotri in the 2012 assembly polls.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra addressed a rally in favour of Sukhu in the state.

One of the key campaigning issues in the area pertained to the old pension scheme (OPS) and the ‘one rank, one pension scheme’.

Nadaun is a general category assembly seat in Hamirpur, where Union Minister Anurag Thakur and former chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal belong. It is one of the 17 assembly segments of the Hamirpur Parliamentary seat.

Voting to elect the new government in Himachal Pradesh began on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. amid tight security arrangements.

A total of around 56 lakh electors who can cast their votes by 5 pm today will decide the fate of 412 candidates who are in the poll fray. The counting of votes will take place on December 8.
