Preparations are in their final stages as Prime minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Terminal 2 of Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on Friday. PM Modi will also unveil a 108-foot-tall statue of Kempe Gowda, the city’s founder.

The T2 of Kempegowda International Airport is built at a cost of around ₹5000 crores. The inauguration of the terminal is expected to double the airport’s capacity for handling passengers as well as the number of check-in and immigration counters.

It is estimated that the airport will be able to handle around five-six crore passengers annually with the new terminal. At present, the airport handles around 2.5 crore passengers annually.

The premises of the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru will soon be adorned with a bronze statue of Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru. This statue was designed by famous Noida-based sculptor Ram Vanji Suttar, who is a Padma Bhushan awardee.

Terminal 2 is designed as a tribute to the Garden City of Bengaluru and the passenger experience is meant to be a “walk in the garden”. Passengers will travel through more than 10,000 square metres of green walls, hanging gardens, and outdoor gardens, and these gardens have been made in India using indigenous technology.

This airport has already set a precedent for sustainability by utilising 100 per cent renewable energy across the campus. Terminal 2 has been created with sustainability principles woven into the design.

It is not the airport that will be the focus, PM Modi is also scheduled to fulfil the long-pending demand for a high-speed train with the launching of the Bengaluru-Mysuru-Chennai Vande Bharat Express from the SBC railway station.

Karnataka Chief minister Basavaraju Bommai, along with his ministers and prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, are also expected to be present at the event.
