Former Twitter chief executive officer (CEO) Jack Dorsey on Saturday sought to placate employees who have been laid off by new boss Elon Musk, owning up the responsibility for “why everyone is in this situation”.

As part of Musk’s rejig plan for Twitter, the company fired around 50 per cent of its close to 7500-strong workforce after his USD 44 billion takeover.

“I realize many are angry with me. I own the responsibility for why everyone is in this situation: I grew the company size too quickly. I apologize for that,” Dorsey, who is gearing up to launch a new social media firm, said on Twitter.

“Folks at Twitter past and present are strong and resilient. They will always find a way no matter how difficult the moment,” he tweeted, adding: “I am grateful for, and love, everyone who has ever worked on Twitter. I don’t expect that to be mutual in this moment…or ever…and I understand.”

As per media reports, Twitter has laid off almost its entire workforce – nearly 250 employees – in India.

Twitter employees across the world received an email early on Friday morning, informing them that they should check their email inboxes for the communication from the company to check whether their employment is impacted due to downsizing.

Some employees had even resigned voluntarily in anticipation of the layoffs at Twitter, which already underwent a round of firing in September this year.

Musk, who calls himself “Chief Twit”, fired the entire Twitter board, including CEO Parag Agrawal just after the announcement of his purchase of the micro-blogging site last month.

In the mail to all employees, Twitter called its decision of downsizing was “unfortunate”, but necessary for the growth of the company.

After his takeover, Musk has announced to introduce new measures and rules and change some old ones, including the launch of a subscription plan and life ban on users violating its guidelines.
