Concerns Over Safety Of Ram Jhula In Rishikesh After Morbi Tragedy

After the Morbi bridge tragedy on Sunday which reportedly killed over 140 people, questions are being raised over the safety of the famous – Ram Jhoola, a suspension bridge built over river Ganga in Rishikesh.

Presently, the Ram Jhoola bridge is open for tourists who come in droves for Neelkanth and Char Dham pilgrimage. With emerging infra support to boost tourism in the state, more tourists are expected to visit Rishikesh this year.

In such a case,  Ram Jhoola may become prone to a similar accident witnessed in Morbi, locals say. However, the Public Works Department has assured that the bridge is safe for tourists.

As the other bridge – Laxman jhula is currently closed for safety purposes, Ram jhula is the only accessible bridge for tourists.

Built in 1986, Ram jhula is one of the iconic landmarks in the holy town of Rishikesh. The iron suspension has a load capacity of 500 kg per square metre.

The Ram jhula bridge connects Sivananda Nagar area of Muni Ki Reti in Tehri Garhwal district to Swargashram in Pauri Garhwal district crossing the river from west to east.

There are many Hindu ashrams and religious centres established at both sides of the Ganges. It connects the bridge between Sivananda Ashram located in Muni Ki Reti to Gita Bhawan, Parmarth Niketan and other temples located in Swargashram.
