The Congress hit out at the Gujarat government amid a report that it is mulling the idea of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state ahead of the crucial assembly elections later this year.

In response to the development, Congress stated on Saturday that their only agenda is to play politics with Hindus and Muslims and cause people to fight.

Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “Elections are being held in Gujarat and when elections are held, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) does Hindu-Muslim politics, does caste politics and makes them fight. All this is part of the conspiracy. The people of the country have recognised this.”

The Congress leader said, “Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra is going on. With the kind of enthusiasm it is receiving, it has been discussed all over the country. We have brought the focus back to corruption, inflation and hunger. Now people have to choose.”

Alleging that BJP does this divisive politics whenever there is an election, Surjewala said, “In Karnataka, they get Lingayats and Vokaligas to fight, Kurba and Bekio to fight. If you go to Gujarat, you will get Patidars and non-Patidars fighting, if you go to Rajasthan, you will get Rajputs and non-Rajputs, and you will get Sikhs and Hindus to fight in Punjab. This is part of their agenda, which is slowly being exposed now.”

Surjewala was responding to a question about the Gujarat government’s plans to implement the UCC. As per media reports, the Gujarat government is contemplating a proposal to constitute a committee so as to adopt UCC in the poll-bound state.

The election commission is yet to announce dates for the assembly elections in the western state, where the Congress has been out of power for the last 27 years. The entry of the AAP into the elections has made the contest more interesting this time as well. It is campaigning aggressively in the state.

Surjewala, who is also in-charge of Karnataka, slammed the BJP government in the southern state over alleged monetary gifts to journalists. The Congress leader alleged that the journalists were given a bribe of ₹1 lakh. He said: “A bribery scam has come to the fore in Karnataka, of which Basavaraj Bommai is guilty.”

Surjewala further said that the BJP’s Karnataka government is the most corrupt government. “The Contractors Association of Karnataka wrote a letter to the Prime Minister complaining that 13,000 schools said that commission has to be paid in the grant money,” he said.

“Bribery was caught in PWD Engineer Recruitment, Assistant Professor Recruitment and Mid-Day Meal,” he added.

Slamming Bommai, Surjewala said, “You have been caught. You should not be in power even for a day. A case of corruption should be filed against him (Basavaraj Bommai) and he should be sent behind bars.”
