The drama unfolded at Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj Barrage on Friday when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma scolded a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officer.
The Member of Parliament also told the officer to take a dip in the Yamuna where a chemical is being sprayed by the department. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government said that the chemical is sprayed to purify the water.
On the other hand, the BJP claimed that the chemical is toxic and harmful to the river water and also to the people who will take a dip during Chhath Puja, scheduled for Saturday.
On Thursday, the BJP leaders, Verma and Manoj Tiwari, visited Kalindi Kunj Barrage and stopped the spraying work being done by the Jal Board.
Later, the vice chairman of DJB, Saurabh Bhardwaj, said the BJP leaders should learn something about science and technology. He said DJB’s anti-foaming chemical technology has also been recommended by the Central Government’s NMCG (National Mission for Clean Ganga).
On Friday, the DJB was spraying the river Yamuna at the Kalindi Kunj Barrage in Okhla when BJP leader Parvesh Verma arrived and stopped the work once more.
The DJB officers, however, told Verma that the chemical is approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and also recommended by NMCG, which is a central government-run body.
Reacting to it, Verma said, “You are thinking about this approval only after eight years (AAP rule in Delhi). Take a dip in this water… Should I put this chemical on your head… Tomorrow people will take a dip in this water (during the Chhath festival) and you are telling me you have got approval.”
During the spat, the officer said that he was a director of the treatment and quality control department of DJB. He also said that he has a copy of the approval following which the spraying of this chemical is being done.
