All three persons allegedly involved in the murder of a 27-year-old Bajrang Dal worker in Shadipur area of central Delhi have been arrested, police said on Tuesday.

Nitesh Kumar was attacked by the three accused over the issue of honking a motorcycle on October 13. He died during treatment in a hospital. His friend Alok had also received critical injuries and is being treated.

The accused have been identified as Aqdas alias Abbas (21), Huzaifa Rehman (20) and Adnan (20), said deputy commissioner of police (DCP), central zone, Shweta Chauhan.

“On the intervening night of October 12 and 13, local police had got information about a quarrel in Shadipur of Ranjit Nagar. By the time police reached the spot, the injured Nitesh Kumar and his friend Alok (28) were already taken to RML Hospital,” said the police.

DCP Chauhan also informed that five police teams were working to nab the accused.

After his murder, relatives of Nitesh along with local residents held a protest and blocked Shadipur road, demanding justice.

As tensions rose, the administration deployed local police and two companies of paramilitary forces in the locality.

Though many on social media claimed that Kumar became a victim of communal tensions in the area, the police said there was a communal angle to the case and called claims on the Internet as “rumours”.

The police also said that the victim had a previous criminal record.

Based on the medicolegal case and inspection of the crime scene, a case was registered under Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The accused were identified through footage obtained from CCTV cameras installed in the area, according to the police.

The footage shows the bike-borne accused waylaid Nitesh and Alok. Soon a scuffle ensued in which the friends sustained injuries. Nitesh died on Sunday, October 16.
