It was a bizarre sight as BJP MLA from Rajasthan’s Pushkar, Suresh Singh Rawat, reached Rajasthan Assembly with a cow in tow to protest against the government’s “inept” handling of the Lumpy Skin disease, which has taken a huge toll on the cattle population across the state.
It got stranger when the cow ran away even as Rawat was staging the protest, causing a massive traffic bottleneck.
As the cow went berserk, commuters had a tough time and panic prevailed. Some people chased the bovine to catch it but in vain.
Interacting with media persons after the incident, MLA Rawat said, “The cow ran away after getting angry with the government and the police. Today, I brought Gau Mata to the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly because the Rajasthan government is not making any arrangements to prevent the disease or treat the sick cows. We have given memorandums to the sub-divisional officer and the district collector several times in my area.”
“We demanded that the government take stern action, spray insecticide and arrange medicines to save the cow. But till date, the Congress government has not taken care of Gau Mata. The Congress government is the killer of lakhs of cows. The government has committed a sin and will face repercussions. The Congress government is responsible for the deaths of cows.”
Lumpy Skin Virus has wiped out a large chunk of the cattle population in Rajasthan and this, resultantly, has affected milk availability. Around 59,000 cattle have died in the state till now. However, many believe that this number is much higher. The government claims to have administered 13 lakh vaccines to the cows.
Alarming visuals recently from different villages of Jodhpur showed thousands of cow carcasses strewn on the fields. Government tractors dug up grounds to bury the dead livestock. The worst affected places were Bikaner, Churu, Hanumangarh, and Ganganagar. The disease started in the western region of the state and spread to the eastern areas.
