The Iranian President, during his meeting with PM Modi, briefed him on the status of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, negotiations on Friday.
Taking to Twitter, PM Modi said, “Held wide-ranging discussions with President Ebrahim Raisi. We talked about the growing India-Iran friendship and the scope to boost ties in sectors like energy, commerce and connectivity.”
The pair in the bilateral meeting took stock of the progress of the Shahid Beheshti terminal, Chabahar Port and underscored the importance of bilateral cooperation in the field of regional connectivity, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday.
Both leaders also discussed the crisis in Afghanistan. Both PM Modi and President Raisi expressed concerns over the Afghan crisis.
PM Modi also held a bilateral meeting with the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The leaders discussed cooperation in a few identified areas, including information technology, healthcare and higher education.
“Opening of Indian educational institutions and partnership between Uzbek and Indian universities was welcomed,” MEA said on Friday.
Meanwhile, Iran has elicited a positive response from China to become a member of BRICS. This came following the signing of the Memorandum of Commitments to become a member of SCO.
Commending Iran for its role in international affairs, China’s President Xi Jinping has expressed his support for Iran’s becoming a member of BRICS.
As per the Iranian president’s secretariat in Tehran, “China supports the membership of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the BRICS organisation,” President Xi Jinping said on Friday morning.
Sanction rigged Iran earlier applied for membership in BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The state is second when it comes to natural gas reserves.
The SCO and Iran have already signed a Memorandum of Commitments for the latter to become a member of the organisation. The transregional block has also initiated the process of inducting Belarus as a member as well. Furthermore, the Maldives, Bahrain, Myanmar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait will be granted the status of SCO dialogue partners.
Meanwhile, during his bilateral meeting with President Jinping, President Raisi said, “The Americans, as well as European parties, have failed to fulfil their commitments to lift the sanctions.” “The Islamic Republic of Iran will not surrender to the bullying of the United States in any way,” he added.
Praising Iran for its independent stance on global affairs, President Jinping said, “Iran-China relations are strategic relations and will continue to develop regardless of any international development.”
