The age of the coins is yet to be ascertained.

Labourers working at a construction site were left pleasantly surprised when tumbled upon a hidden treasure – around 50 antique coins near Jaipur, Rajasthan.

The construction site where the antique coins were recovered is in Jamwa Ramgarh village, which is around 30 km far from the state capital Jaipur.

As the news spread, the local administration was informed that the coins were taken into custody by the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM).

However, it is yet to be ascertained the age of these coins and the kingdom they belonged to.

This is not the first time when the ancient currency has been found in the village. Earlier this year, 82 coins dating back to the ear of Pratihara (8-11 CE) and Sultanate (12-15 CE) were discovered in the same area. The coins were found in an earthen pot by MGNREGA workers while digging a pond.

Speaking to The New Indian, Tehsildar Rakesh Meena said archaeologists have been called from Jaipur to analyse to take the coins into their custody.

“We received information on Thursday from villagers about the recovery of old coins. We immediately took them into custody and the state archaeology department was informed. We are waiting for the officials from Jaipur to arrive and look into these coins. Till then they are safely kept in our treasury,” he said.

Prince Kumar Uppal, a numismatic at the state archaeology department, said that some officials will visit the place soon.

“We will visit Jamwa Ramgarh on Monday. At first, it has to be identified from which era these coins belong to, and what metal they are made. According to the Rajasthan Treasure Trove Act 1961, the state and the competent department will have authority over the coins falling in the category of the antics,” he said.

Experts believe that the discovery of such coins indicate further gives strength to the belief that Jamwa Ramgarh was a wealthy and flourishing town during the Amber kingdom in the 16th century when hiding money in the land was a very common practice.

Not just Jamwa Ramgarh, ancient coins have been recovered from several parts of Rajasthan.
