Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to upgrade 10 lakh government schools across the country, not just 14,500. The Central government recently announced plans to develop 14,500 government schools across the country.
The letter comes amid an ongoing war of words over the education policy and development of schools in Delhi between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-run-Delhi government and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-run Central Government. The AAP claims that its education development model is being appreciated on international platforms, however, the BJP claims it’s only a show-off.
In his letter, Kejriwal said that he got to know from media reports that the Central government is going to upgrade 14,500 government schools in the country. “It is good. The condition of government schools in the country is very poor. We need to upgrade them.”
“Out of a total 27 crore children, 18 crore study in government schools. Over 80 per cent of schools are in pathetic condition. India cannot develop with this kind of poor education infrastructure,” pointed out Kejriwal.
He also said after 1947 (after Independence), the then government should have made schools in every village. In the past 75 years that has not yet happened. India should not waste time anymore.
“You have planned to upgrade just 14,500 schools in the country. At this pace, it will take 100 years to upgrade all. There are 10 lakh government schools existing across India. I request you to please upgrade all the 10 lakh schools together,” said Delhi Chief Minister.
He further said 130 crore people of the country want that the development of India shouldn’t stop. “Everyone here wants India to become the number one country.”
“In Delhi, we upgraded the schools by incurring little expenses. We extend you full support in the nation-building exercise,” Kejriwal wrote in the letter.
