The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Manish Sisodia are at it again as the former refuted the claims of the Delhi Deputy Chief minister that an agency officer died by suicide after he was pressured to frame the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in a false case.

Jitendra Kumar, who worked as a deputy legal advisor for the CBI, allegedly committed suicide at his south Delhi residence last week. The CBI on Monday said that Kumar was in no way connected with the investigation of the Delhi Excise Policy case. Sisodia has been named an accuse in the case.

CBI spokesperson RC Joshi said, “Today in a press conference held by Sisodia, one of the accused named in the FIR registered on August 17 pertaining to Delhi Excise Policy for year 2021-22, stated that Kumar committed suicide because he was pressured to make a strong false case against him.”

“CBI strongly refutes this mischievous and misleading statement by Sisodia. It is clarified that the officer was in no way connected with the investigation of this case,” the CBI official said.

Joshi said that Kumar was Deputy Legal Advisor in-charge of prosecution, in which capacity he was supervising prosecutors who were conducting the trials of already charge-sheeted cases in Delhi.

His remarks came after Sisodia alleged that Kumar was forced to make the case “legally sound against me”. “CBI’s Deputy Legal Advisor Kumar was being pressurised to give illegal clearance for my arrest. That’s why he committed suicide,” the AAP leader said.

The CBI also said that, as per the Delhi Police, which is conducting an inquest into the death, the officer has not held anyone responsible for his death in his suicide note.

He said that the mischievous and misleading statement of Sisodia is an attempt to divert attention from the ongoing investigation in the Delhi Excise Policy case, and also amounts to interference in the inquest proceedings into the death of the gentleman officer.

Besides Sisodia, the CBI has named three officers of the Excise Department and 11 others, including two companies.

The CBI case is based on the complaint shared by Lt Governor VK Saxena, alleging irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy of the GNCTD of Delhi for the year 2021-22.

The CBI carried out searches at 31 locations on August 19, including the premises of Sisodia. The CBI team also searched the bank lockers of Sisodia at Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad SBI branch last week. The CBI has also issued a lookout circular against eight people in the case.
