Another Jolt To Congress As Spokesperson Shergill Resigns

Discontent is brewing in Congress as party spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill resigned from his post. The move comes days after two senior leaders, Anand Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azad, also resigned from their respective posts.

In his letter to Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi, Shergill alleged that the party is influenced by the “self-serving interests” of individuals indulging in “sycophancy” and consistently ignoring on-ground reality. “I hereby resign from the post of National Spokesperson of the Party,” he said.

Shergill, who is an advocate by profession, wrote, “The primary reason being that the ideology and the vision of the current decision makers of the Indian National Congress are no longer in sync with the aspirations of the youth and modern India.”

Hitting out at the party leadership, he said, “Furthermore, it pains me to say that the decision-making is no longer for the interests of the public and the country. Rather, it is influenced by the self-serving interests of individuals indulging in sycophancy and consistently ignoring on-ground reality. This is something I cannot morally accept. ”

Shergill was one of the youngest spokespersons of the party and a familiar face to present the party’s views in television debates.

Earlier this week, senior Congress leader Sharma resigned as Chairperson of the Himachal Pradesh Steering Committee. Before Sharma, veteran party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad also resigned from the J&K Congress’ campaign committee. Both Azad and Sharma are members of the G23 group, who had written to the party chief demanding active leadership.

The resignation of Shergill came at a time when Sonia Gandhi is travelling abroad for her treatment along with her son and former party chief Rahul Gandhi and his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi will be returning to India and will address the Mehangai Par Halla Bol rally on September 4 at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi.
