DEHRADUN: After drawing flak for his “those houses that do not hoist the national flag can’t be trusted” remark, Uttarakhand Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Mahendra Bhatt clarified that he meant only the party workers’ houses.

“Our brave freedom fighters sacrificed their lives. I mean that I want every home across the country to hoist the national flag as per our Prime Minister’s request to the people of India as we are celebrating Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,” Bhatt said.

Bhatt questioned those who do not want to hoist the national flag in their homes. He asked, “Why would any citizen of this country feel any problem in hoisting our national flag in their houses to celebrate the festival of our independence?” “In my opinion, no Indian has any issues with the hoisting of our national flag,” he said.

On August 10, during his visit to Haldwani in the Nainital district, Bhatt said, “We will not be able to trust a household where the Tricolour is not hoisted. I want photos of such houses so that people and society should see such houses and families. ”

The Opposition Congress lashed out at the state BJP president and also attacked the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). “The Congress party and the people of this country agree with Bhatt ji. The BJP and Sangh Parivar RSS did not accept the national flag for over 50 years. They did not hoist the flag at the RSS headquarters,” the party’s state president Karan Mahra said.

Following the uproar, state cabinet ministers and BJP functionaries supported Bhatt’s statement. “The Congress party is creating an unnecessary row. The BJP president’s context was about the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. Congress must put its own house in order first and then comment on others,” State cabinet minister Rekha Arya said.

Manvir Chauhan, the state media in-charge, said, “Congress has divided the country in the name of religion and petty politics. They don’t have any right to make statements. They should be organizing ‘Congress Jodo Yatra’ first and then look elsewhere.”
