NEW DELHI: A man was arrested with US dollars worth over Rs 15 lakhs concealed inside packets of spices and layers of crunchy ‘papad’ at the Delhi airport, authorities said on Tuesday.

Rishikesh, a resident of Delhi, was apprehended by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in the wee hours of Tuesday with USD 19,900.

The accused was to fly to Bangkok, Thailand by a Vistara flight.

CISF personnel noticed suspicious activities of the passenger at Terminal-3 and diverted him to a random checking point for thorough checking of his luggage.

“On checking of his baggage through X-BIS machine, the doubtful image of concealment of some foreign currency in the baggage was noticed. The matter was informed to senior officers of CISF and customs officials,” the officials cited above said.

Meanwhile, airport authorities allowed the passenger to complete the check-in formalities and kept a close watch on him.

After clearing the check-in process and immigration formalities, he was intercepted by CISF surveillance and intelligence staff and was taken to the departure customs office.

On thorough checking of his bag, USD 19,900 worth approximately Rs 15.5 lakh was detected concealed inside the spice boxes and between the layers of ‘papad’ packets.

On interrogation, the passenger could not produce valid documents to carry such an amount of foreign currency. Hence, he along with the currency notes was handed over to customs officials for further action.
