NEW DELHI: All citizens aged 18 years or above can get their booster shots of the Covid-19 vaccine free of cost for 75 days starting July 15, the Central government announced on Wednesday.
Addressing media persons after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here, Union minister Anurag Thakur said, “On the occasion of 75th Independence Day, it has been decided that from 15th July till the next 75 days, all citizens above 18 years of age will be given booster doses free of cost.”
Eligible people can get the free booster doses at all government-run vaccination centres, he informed.
As per the Central government data, less than one per cent of the target population of 77 crores in the age group of 18-59 have been given preventive doses so far.
“About 26 per cent of the estimated 160 million eligible population aged 60 years and above as well as healthcare and frontline workers have received a booster dose,” it said.
In another important decision, the Union Cabinet has approved the construction of the Taranga Hill-Ambaji- Abu Road new rail line at an estimated cost of Rs 2798.16 crore.
The 1160-km-long rail line is expected to be completed in the next four years. It will generate direct employment during construction for about 40 lakh man-days, the government said.
The rail line will connect the famous pilgrimage destination of Ambaji and Ajitnath Jain temple at Taranga Hill in Gujarat.
This line will facilitate faster movement of agricultural and local products and also provide improved mobility of the people in the region within the state of Gujarat and Rajasthan and also to other parts of the country.
It will also provide an alternative route for the existing Ahmedabad-Abu Road railway line.
