NEW DELHI/CHANDIGARH: Alleged mastermind of Punjab’s Nabha jailbreak – Ramanjit Singh Brar alias Romi – will soon be brought to the country as the extradition is cleared from Hong Kong court, sources told The New Indian on Tuesday.

The extradition clearance from Hong Kong’s Eastern Magistrates’ Courts (dated July 8, 2022), a copy of which is with The New Indian, states “… I hereby order Ramanjit Singh alias Romi to be committed to custody… to await the Chief Executive’s decision as to his surrender, in respect of 1 or more of those offences, to the Republic of India by which the request for surrender in respect of Singh was made…”

A Police officer associated with the case said that the Hong Kong court has ruled in favour of the extradition. Police sources say he will be brought to India soon.

Romi had executed the jailbreak in 2016, in which six criminals including two terrorists managed to run away. He was previously involved in multiple cases of murder, smuggling drugs, arms supply and arms act.

Sources said his process of extradition was started in 2018 after he was nabbed in Hong Kong in a case of robbery. He would also promote terror and anti-India activities in the country.

Singh was arrested in 2016 but got bail soon. He managed to escape Hong Kong but remained in touch with Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, another plotter of the Nabha jailbreak. Sekhon, however, was arrested in 2017.

Interpol had issued a Red Corner Notice against Singh. His name also surfaced in the encounter of one gangster from Punjab – Vicky Gounder – in 2018. It was stated that Singh was providing logistical and financial support to Gounder while sitting abroad.
