UP Police Widens Probe, Sets Up SIT Against Zubair Now

NEW DELHI/LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe six FIRs registered against Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair in different districts of the state.

In an official order, the police said that the fact-checker is accused of making sarcastic remarks against anchors of news channels, posting derogatory posts on Hindu gods, and hurting the sentiments of Hindus.

One FIR each has been registered against Zubair in Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Muzaffarnagar, and Ghaziabad, and two cases in Hathras under Sections 295A (insulting a religion), 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 147 (rioting), 504 (insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) and relevant sections of IT Act.

The two-member SIT will have IG (Jail) Preetinder Singh as its head and DIG Amit Kumar Verma as its member, as per the order, a copy of which is in possession of The New Indian.

The team will submit its report in the court of law.

 

 

Earlier on Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked Uttar Pradesh Police to submit the version of the investigating officer in the Sitapur case where he was arrested for allegedly insulting Hindu saints.
