Paisa Bolta Hai: ‘Thor’ Hits The Bull’s Eye, ‘Shamshera’ To Opens Well

While Bollywood films are biting the dust one after another at the turnstiles, a Hollywood film ‘Thor – Love And Thunder’ is setting the cash registers ringing. The movie, which hit the screens last Thursday, raked in Rs 65 crore net in its extended first weekend. Though the collections took a slight dip on Monday, it still managed to earn Rs 5.5 crore net. The five-day business of ‘Thor – Love And Thunder’ stands at a robust Rs 70.5 crore net in India. It will comfortably cross the Rs 100 crore net milestone in India.

This is the second Hollywood film this year that has got the audience’s nod. Earlier, ‘Dr. Strange – In The Multiverse Of Madness’ had racked up Rs 132 crore net in India and became a runaway hit.

There wasn’t much enthusiasm in the trade for Vidyut Jammwal’s ‘Khuda Haafiz 2’, but it is doing fair business in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The film has benefitted from Eid in these places. However, in the rest of the circuits, the collections are utterly dismal. It has netted Rs 7 crore in the first four days so far.

Madhavan’s ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ had opened to rave reviews but the initial was poor. But due to upbeat word-of-mouth, it held resolutely at the ticket windows though the collections are on the lower side. After 11 days, the movie has clocked up Rs 14 crore net in Hindi circuits. The Tamil version of the film surprisingly could not attract the crowd in Tamil Nadu.

The Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani starrer ‘Jug Jugg Jeeyo’ is a rare Bollywood movie that has eschewed extremes and settled for average performance at the box office. In 2022, films have either been monumental hits or unmitigated bummers. But this Raj Mehta directorial, produced by Karan Johar, is an exception. The best business for the film has come from the Delhi/NCR region. Cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad have also put up decent numbers but it is a damp squib in mass circuits where its shows were canceled at many places in the first week itself.

After the third weekend, the movie garnered Rs 75 crore. The collections will show an upturn during the weekend as families will come out to see it in a few big cities. The lifetime business will be around Rs 80-82 crore net in India.

All eyes are now on Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Shamshera’ which is helmed by Karan Malhotra. The trade is expecting this Yash Raj production to open with a bang the trailer drew a positive response within the industry.

Talking exclusively with The New Indian, Vishek Chauhan – a prominent exhibitor from Bihar – reckons the audience is supremely excited to see Ranbir Kapoor as a mass entertainer. “I am getting a lot of inquiries from youngsters for ‘Shamshera’ and usually youth drive the opening. That is why I am gung-ho about the prospects of this film,” he said.

“I am thrilled that Ranbir is taking a detour and doing this kind of a film. He has all the trappings to become a superstar. I hope this film succeeds as that will make him realize the importance of doing movies with wider appeal. ‘Shamshera’ seems like a film which has all the ingredients which one wants in a big-screen extravaganza,” he stated enthusiastically.

Chauhan also feels this Ranbir movie is exceedingly important for Bollywood. “We need more filmmakers who have the vision to make large-scale spectacles. if ‘Shamshera’ clicks, Bollywood will be compelled to make more such films. This space at present is successfully taken over by films from Southern industries such as ‘KGF – Chapter 2’ and ‘RRR’. I hope Ranbir realizes that it is easier to be a fine actor than becoming a superstar,” he concluded.
