RANCHI: Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren on Friday suspended the 2018-batch IAS officer Syed Riyaz Ahmed, three days after he was arrested over allegation of sexual harassment of an IIT Mandi student.

The IIT Mandi student was serving as an intern in Khunti during Ahmed’s posting. Ahmed was arrested on Monday night following the filing of a case at the women’s police station.

The victim had described the event, saying that she was one of eight IIT students who had been recruited for a summer internship by the Khunti district administration.

In her complaint to the police, she alleged that the IAS forcibly kissed her on her lips and she was shocked by his behaviour.
“On July 1, Riyaz Ahmed had called group of students to his residence for a party, where he arranged for alcoholic drinks. The next morning, on July 2, just before breakfast, he took us for a tour of his residence at 6-7 am in the morning and then again asked me to come to his residence at 8.30 pm with a condom. He tried to kiss me forcibly. During this time, Ahmed’s district development council (DDC) officer was called to facilitate this tour. After 5-10 minutes, he called up on the number of a friend ***** Chakma, pressurising me to come to his residence with condom,” the girl has disclosed in her plaint against the SDM.
“During all this time, he kept staring at me with evil intentions and kept talking of bringing a condom,” it said.
Ahmed, who originally comes from Nasik in Maharashtra, is married.

The crew of interns had arrived at Khunti on June 14.

Jharkhand Police has said that the testimony of other interns is also being recorded in this case.

“Even after I managed to flee, he kept calling my friends and telling them to send me to him,” the victim said in the FIR statement.
