LONDON/NEW DELHI: Union minister of state for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar met United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson in London to discuss the Indo-British future in technology and innovation sectors. The minister also discussed the achievements of the Digital India mission.

Chandrasekhar was accompanied by a delegation of representatives from Indian startups and Unicorns along with innovators. The minister also met British MP Paul Scully, the Parliamentary under-secretary of state for small business, consumers and labour markets, in this regard.

“We want to take the digital economy to 25 per cent of the total economy. The UK government also wants to expand the slice of that pie too,” Chandrasekhar later said.

The Union MoS also held a ministerial roundtable discussion with Priti Patel, home secretary – UK, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, secretary of state for international trade and president of the Board of Trade – Government of UK and Chris Philip, minister for technology and digital economy the UK at the India Global Forum.

Outlining the rapid strides India had taken in the field of technology, Chandrasekhar said, “Unlike the 1990s, when India relied on its alliances for technological support, the tables had turned now.” He also informed that the country is designing 5G gear and manufacturing devices that go into the making of 5G products.

The Union MoS also attended a session on the Future of Digital at the IGF, UK where he shared his views on the rapid growth of digitalisation. Chandrasekhar also focused on the need for safeguarding Digital Nagriks against user harm.

The minister also called for collaboration among countries, especially like-minded democracies, to ensure safety and trust for the users in the boundaryless domain of cyberspace.

“Safety and trust will be paramount. India can’t do that alone, we need to work with partner countries in shaping the future of a secure internet,” he said.

 

The IT minister also paid his respects to 12th-century Kannada philosopher Basaveshvara, whose statue was unveiled by PM Narendra Modi in London at the banks of the River Thames in 2015.
