UDAIPUR: A war of words broke out between the Congress and the BJP over the brutal killing of a Hindu tailor by two Islamist extremists here last week, with the former alleging the saffron party’s links with one of the killers.

A photo of the main accused Riyaz Attari with BJP minority cell leader Irshad Chainwala emerged as the flashpoint of the controversy. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera alleged that Attari was a BJP member.

Armed with the photo, Congress launched an attack on the BJP and questioned the Central government’s decision to “quickly” transfer the case to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Hitting back at the grand old party, the BJP termed the allegation as an attempt by the ruling Congress to “shift blame” and hide the “failure” of the Ashok Gehlot government.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Khera alleged the main accused Riyaz Attari often participated in the programmes attended by Rajasthan BJP leader and former minister Gulabchand Kataria.

“Not only this, but pictures of the main accused Riyaz Attari attending the meetings of the BJP’s Rajasthan minority unit are also in front of the world,” Khera claimed.

Showing Attari’s photo in several Facebook posts put up by Attari and others over the last three years, Khera said the killer was not only close to BJP leaders but was also an “active member of the BJP”.

“The killer of Kanhaiya Lal, Riyaz Attari is a member of the BJP,” Khera said in a tweet.

In response, Rajasthan BJP minority cell president Sadiq Khan said, “Anyone can have a photo with any leader. But it does not prove that he is a member of the party.”

Congress is trying to shift the blame on the BJP to divert public attention from the “failure of the Ashok Gehlot government”, Khan told media persons in Jaipur.

The New Indian team visited Chainwala’s residence situated in narrow lanes of Mukherjee Chowk Sabjimandi area of Udaipur city, but he was not available for comments.

“He is not at home and we don’t know when he will return,” one of his family members said.

His neighbours hailed him as a popular and nice person. They also said that Chainwala was in Congress before he joined the BJP a few years back.

On June 28, the tailor, Kanhaiya Lal Teli, was beheaded in broad daylight at his shop in Udaipur by two men — Attari and Ghous Mohammed. They were arrested from Rajsamand within hours of the incident.
