LUCKNOW/DELHI: The Samajwadi Party on Friday sought to project a united face as it called leaders from as far as southern states on the occasion of birthday of its party president and former UP CM Akhilesh Yadav.
Senior party leaders including state unit presidents from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan gathered at the party office here and felicitated Yadav who turned 49.
On this occasion, Yadav distributed laptops to bright students, which he termed, as a reminder of his government’s free laptop scheme.
Party workers also organised celebrations across all districts of Uttar Pradesh and in major cities across states where it has an organisational presence.
It is arguably the first such grand public event by the Samajwadi Party since its failed endeavour to wrest power from Yogi Adityanath in the February-March polls even as SP increased its tally from a disastrous performance in 2017 polls to register wins on 111 assembly seats, finishing a distant second to the ruling BJP that won 255 seats. BJP had made a record comeback with no other ruling party ever returning to power in UP.
Yadav’s party though had to face a drubbing in the recently concluded by-polls in Azamgarh and Rampur Lok Sabha seats. He had himself vacated the Azamgarh seat following his win from Karhal Vidhan Sabha seat in the UP Vidhan Sabha polls.
Party leaders distributed sweets and food among the needy, planted trees and distributed fruits and medical kits in various government hospitals.
Kerala unit chief Saji Pothen Thomas gifted a shawl made of Kerala’s traditional silk to the former chief minister. Tamil Nadu party president P Lognadhan Yadav presented him with statues of elephants and horses. Leaders from Andhra garlanded Yadav with a garland made of cashew nuts.
Workers in neighbouring Uttarakhand celebrated his birthday by cutting cakes in Rishikesh, observing it as ‘Sankalp Divas’.
In Lucknow, former national general secretary of Mahila Sabha, Vandana Chaturvedi organized tree plantation and distribution of laddus. Workers also distributed sweets and medical kits to children at Children’s Medical Centre in the city.
