SRINAGAR: In a major success ahead of the Amarnath Yatra two militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Monday.
IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar termed the operation important as the encounter site is very close to the Amarnath yatra route. Moreover, LeT’s shadow organisation, The Resistance Force (TRF), has issued a threat to the yatra.
Acting on specific information, regarding the presence of terrorists in village Nowpora-Kherpora in the Trubji area of Kulgam, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, Army (1RR) and CRPF.
During the search operation, the terrorist fired indiscriminately upon the search party. In the ensuing encounter, two local terrorists of the proscribed terror outfit LeT were killed. The terrorists are identified as Zubair Ahmad Mir resident of Qaimoh Kulgam and Idrees Ahmad Dar resident of Kulpora Kulgam.
As per police records, both the killed terrorists were categorized and involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on police and security forces along with civilian atrocities including the killing of PRIs. Zubair Ahmad Mir was active since August 2021 and was trying to revive the terror folds by recruiting and motivating the gullible youth including terrorist Idrees Ahmad to join the terror folds.
Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition have been recovered from the site of the encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation, said the police.
