DEHRADUN: Hearing public interest litigation related to the death of equines (mules, horses) in the Char Dham Yatra route, Uttarakhand High Court on Wednesday asked the state government to submit a detailed reply within three weeks.
Gauri Maulekhi, the petitioner, told The New Indian, “Honorable court was not satisfied with the response of the state government on the issue. The court has directed the respondents to submit detailed replies within three weeks.”
The PIL by Maulekhi, member secretary of People For Animals (PFA), stated that more than 20,000 equines are used on various pilgrimage trek routes to carry pilgrims. More than 600 have died in the last two months due to sheer exhaustion, disease, injuries and lack of basic veterinary care, lack of adequate fodder, colic caused by drinking cold water at such high altitudes along with many other issues.
Earlier on June 8, Uttarakhand high court issued a notice to the state government while hearing the PIL, alleging deaths of equines (mules, horses) on the Char Dham Yatra trek routes due to cruelty, ignorance and tourism, trade peddled in the name of Gods.
Last month, former union minister Maneka Gandhi’s PFA sent a legal notice to state government officials including the chief secretary and director general of police of Uttarakhand.
“Keeping in mind your esteemed positions in the State machinery, your Constitutional duties and responsibilities, it is shameless and abominable that you the Noticees are sitting idly by while the human and animal populace of the State is being subjected to great inconvenience and difficulty,” says the legal notice to the chief secretary, additional chief secretary, director general of police, secretary animal husbandry and others.
