NEW DELHI: Congress interim chief Sonia Gandhi, who has been admitted to a hospital here for COVID complications, has got a fungal infection in the lower respiratory tract, said the party leaders on Friday.

Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on June 12. She had tested positive for COVID on June 1, party leaders informed on June 2.

In a statement, Congress media in-charge and party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “Sonia Gandhi after her admission to hospital on June 12 developed profuse bleeding from the nose following a recent COVID infection.”

Ramesh, who is also a former union minister and Rajya Sabha MP said, “She was immediately put under treatment and underwent a related follow-up procedure on the morning of June 16. A fungal infection in her lower respiratory tract was also detected upon her admission.”

He said that she is currently being treated for it along with other post-COVID symptoms. “She continues to be under close observation and treatment,” he added.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned Sonia Gandhi for questioning on May 3 this year to appear before it on June 8 in connection with the National Herald case. However, she tested positive for COVID and asked the investigating agency for another date. The ED has asked her to appear on June 23 in connection with the case.

Besides Sonia Gandhi, the ED has also summoned her son and former party chief Rahul Gandhi. The ED has questioned Rahul Gandhi for over 31 hours in connection with the case and has asked him to appear before it on June 20 for the fourth time.

Rahul Gandhi was earlier summoned to appear before the ED on Friday, however, citing the health of his mother he asked for another date.

Rahul Gandhi even during his questioning visited his mother along with his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at the hospital on Monday afternoon and Tuesday night.

Rahul Gandhi also stayed at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Thursday night.
