NEW DELHI: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi appeared for questioning before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald money laundering case for the second day on Tuesday.

Gandhi was questioned for more than 10 hours by the financial probe agency on Monday, the day which saw high octane political drama and protests in the streets with the Delhi Police detaining many top leaders including Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, Rajya Sabha MP KC Venugopal and others.

On Tuesday, Gandhi was accompanied by his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra when he arrived at the ED headquarters here. He also met senior party leaders before reaching ED office.

Earlier this morning, the Delhi Police detained several senior Congress leaders and MPs like Manickam Tagore, PL Punia, KC Venugopal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Gaurav Gogoi, Deepender Singh Hooda, Ranjeet Ranjan, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Imran Pratapgarhi.

Most of these leaders spent most of their day on Monday in detention and were released in the night.

In an advisory, the traffic police advised commuters to avoid Motilal Nehru Marg, Akbar Road, Janpath, Gol Methi junction, Tughlak Road Junction, Claridges Junction, Q-point Junction, Sunehri Masjid Junction, Maulana Azad Road Junction and Man Singh Road between 7 am and 12 pm.

Addressing a press conference this morning, party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala accused the Modi government of targeting Gandhi because he has been raising issues of national importance like Chinese aggression along the LAC, inflation, fuel price hike, unemployment, and religious vendetta among other.

“This attack is on that fearless voice. This attack is on public issues. This attack is on questions related to the rights of unemployed, poor, small shopkeepers and traders, middle class and employed, women, Dalits, backward and tribals and constitution,” he said.

“We will not be afraid, we will not bow down, we will not be suppressed, we will keep fighting for the country,” Surjewala added.

The case was registered by the ED case about nine months ago after a trial court in Delhi took cognisance of an Income Tax Department probe carried out on the basis of a private criminal complaint filed by former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy in 2013.

Swamy had claimed that Young Indian Limited (YIL) “took over” the assets of the defunct print media outlet, National Herald in a “malicious” manner to gain profit and assets worth over Rs 2,000 crore. The BJP leader also alleged that YIL had paid Rs 50 lakh to obtain the rights to recover Rs 90.25 crore which AJL owed the Congress party.
