NEW DELHI: After nearly two years of break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, India and Bangladesh resumed the passenger train services on Sunday.

The Kolkata – Khulna – Kolkata bound Bandhan Express was flagged off from Kolkata on Sunday morning and Kolkata – Dhaka – Kolkata bound Maitree Express train was flagged off from Dhaka Cantonment station in Bangladesh on the same day.

The third passenger express train between India and Bangladesh, Mitali Express, will start running from June 1. The new train will travel between New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Mitali express will have First Class AC seating and four AC Chair cars.

After the passenger service train was flagged off, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka in a tweet said, “In suspension for nearly 2 years due to COVID-19, cross-border Maitri Express train service b/w Dhaka & Kolkata resumed today, with the train being flagged off from Dhaka Cantonment station.”

“After a long wait due to COVID-19, cross-border train service b/w Kolkata & Khulna resumed today, with the train being flagged off from Kolkata. Resumption of this critical cross-border service will greatly ease passenger movement,” the High Commission further stated.

The Mitali Express will be flagged off by the Railway Ministries of India and Bangladesh virtually.

The resumption of train services not only strengthens people to people contact between the two countries but also boosts trade relations between India and Bangladesh.
