NEW DELHI: Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi will play an important role in the three-day crucial Chintan Shivir and help the party chart a future course of action to overcome challenges, said spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala.
Marred by continuous poll debacles and high-profile desertions, the Grand Old Party’s ‘Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir’ in Rajasthan’s Udaipur between May 13 and May 15 will see party leaders introspecting, deliberating, and reviewing its policies.
“Rahul Gandhi is our leader. We are hopeful that in the different groups of this Chintan Shivir, he will play important role so that on those issues we decide for the future course of the party,” Surjewala told media persons here.

The all-important brainstorming sessions comes amid calls from within the party for sweeping reforms including change in leadership. Several senior leaders led by former Union minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, popularly known as G-23, have demanded for a visible and active leadership.
Sonia Gandhi will be the last speaker at the Chintan Shivir to be attended by more than 400 leaders. Rahul will address party workers just before his mother Sonia.
The party will discuss political, economic, social justice, farmers, youth and organizational issues and adopt ‘Udaipur Nav Sankalp’.
Surjewala reiterated party chief Sonia Gandhi’s call to set aside personal differences and collectively work for the party.
“Sonia Gandhi has said that party is going through a tough time and today we need to set aside our personal setbacks. Those who were given prominent roles need to work for the party. Personal relations can see some ups and downs but the country and the party comes first,” the Congress leader said.
Congress has been on a losing streak since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) overthrew the Manmohan Singh government at Centre in the 2014 general elections. It has lost two Lok Sabha elections since 2014 and several states where it was ruling. The party faced a massive defeat in Punjab and failed to make a dent in four other state in assembly polls earlier this year.
