NEW DELHI: In a major development in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan, the National Resistance Front on Saturday announced that they have captured Abdullah Khel and Abshar districts from the Taliban led government following a fierce fight.
The Panjshir based resistance force has been fighting with the Taliban since the Islamist extremist group captured Kabul in August last year. NRF is the de facto power that is controlling the hilly Panjshir valley.
Ahmad Massoud, the former Afghanistan Defence Minister, heads the front with the support of emergency time President Amrullah Saleh.
“The brave forces of the NRF have liberated all of Abdullah Khel & Abshar districts, except for the city centres. The district centres are besieged by our door (and) the Taliban are asking time to prepare for their surrender,” the Panjshir based National Resistance Front said in a tweet.
The Northern Resistance Front said that a gun-fire was going on in the Abshar district of Panjshir province.
“Tonight the lions of the Hindu Kush under the command of Khalid Amiry have launched an all out offensive in Panjshir. The dawn of freedom is near,” Ali Maisam Nazary, Head of Foreign Relations of the National Resistance Front said in a tweet.
The operation has killed 13 Taliban fighters, and NRF spokesman, Sibghatullah Ahmadi claims that five of their armoured vehicles have been destroyed.
Ahmadi further said that the Resistance Front forces had also taken control of the Doab checkpoint. Nine Taliban members were killed and six others were injured during this phase of the liberation operation.
