SRINAGAR: The air was filled with despair, amid the sound of sobbing, as thousands of people participated in the funeral prayers of constable Ghulam Hassan Dar. Dar was shot dead by terrorists near Aiwa Bridge along Dr Ali Jan road in Srinagar district on Saturday.

The funeral took place late on Saturday night, barely an hour after a wreath-laying ceremony was held for the slain constable at the district police lines in Srinagar.

There was a sombre mood at the funeral procession at his native Danwar Eidgah area as Dar’s wailing relations were seen beating chests.

The family has shifted to the area to a newly constructed house a day before Eid. His son Ajaj Ahmad Dar said that they were all happy before cruel hands snatched his father. Ajaj’s sister, a second-year student, is in a state of shock and is admitted to a hospital.

“It is cold-blooded murder and sheer terrorism. We are hopeful that murders will be unveiled very soon,” said Ali Muhammad Dar, the victim’s brother. “If the killing of policemen will bring Azadi, we will gather them all and kill them,” he said. “This is sheer terrorism and families are being orphaned.”

“Whatever happened is totally wrong. He was not shooting people or troubling them. He was just going on his duty on his vehicle. This is his only job, to go in the morning and come back home in the evening. This (terror attack) is totally wrong. We condemn this attack on him,” Ali Muhammad said.

On Saturday, an unarmed J&K police constable Dar, who was going for his duty, was fired upon by terrorists in one of the busiest areas of downtown Srinagar, Ali Jan road. The terrorists left Dar critically injured.

Dar was shifted to SKIMS Soura where he succumbed to his injuries late last night.

The area concerned was immediately cordoned off after the incident and a search operation was started by the Jammu and Kashmir Police along with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to arrest the terrorists.
