Military Intelligence Arrests UP Man Posing As Army Officer

KOLKATA: A 22-year-old man along with his four associates has been arrested from Kolkata’s New Market area by sleuths of military intelligence for imposing as an Army officer, officials said on Tuesday.

The man, Shivam Pandey, was in combat fatigues of an Army officer when he was picked up by the military intelligence barely a few kilometers from the Army’s Eastern Command headquarters.

“Raids were conducted simultaneously at nearby places and 4 more accomplices were also arrested,” the officials said.

Along with an army uniform, a fake identity card and various letter pads describing him as a lieutenant officer posted as the director of security infantry were recovered from Pandey’s possession.

He caught the attention of city-based military intelligence through his activities on social media platforms. The officials said that the accused was very active online and had been posting a lot of updates on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.

He had portrayed himself as an officer posted at Srinagar-based Chinar Corps and had listed a book ‘Untold Stories The From Indian Army’ for sale on online marketplaces.

Following surveillance for more than a month, it became evident that he was an imposter, the officials said, adding that he was apprehended following a trap on a specific input that he will be travelling to Kolkata from Uttar Pradesh.

On his social media accounts, Pandey frequently posted updates related to the Indian Army, promotional content, and ironically, even “fake alerts” in which he highlighted several financial scams.
