NEW DELHI: In one of its biggest hauls in recent times, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Thursday seized 50 kg of high-quality heroin and 47 kg of other narcotic substances along with Rs 30 lakhs in cash from the Shaheen Bagh area in Delhi on Thursday.
The agency had arrested one person in connection with what is suspected to be an international drug smuggling racket. The NCB also said that during the searches, they also seized a cash-counting machine from the residential premises of the arrested accused.
“The contraband was stored in travel bags, bag packs and jute sacks. The seized heroin originated from Afghanistan,” said NCB Deputy Director General (Ops) Sanjay Kumar Singh. The seized heroin was packed in packages of popular e-commerce company “Flipkart” to evade detection.
The NCB suspects that the drug money was being channelled via the “hawala” channels.
The NCB said that it had received information about a drug syndicate involving Indian and Afghan nationals, operating in and around Delhi or neighbouring states.
These syndicates have been smuggling goods to India through the sea as well as land routes wherein heroin was smuggled in with various legitimate goods. Heroin was later extracted from those goods by the Indian counterparts with the help of some Afghan nationals, the agency said.
“Several raids were conducted, and are still going on, to bust the entire network. The syndicate was found to be connected with drug traffickers of the entire north region including Punjab, Haryana, UP, Uttarakhand and Delhi,” Singh added.
