Argentinean FM Recalls Old Family’s Ties In Maiden India Visit

NEW DELHI: It was an emotional moment for Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero as he landed in New Delhi for his maiden visit to the country.

In a meeting with his Indian counterpart Dr S Jaishankar on Sunday, Cafiero shared his family connection with India that goes back to 1951.

“Today, FM @SantiagoCafiero shared a family connection with India. His grandfather signed a ‘Jute for Wheat’ agreement with India in 1951. Counting on him to take this tradition further,” Dr. Jaishankar tweeted.

During the meeting, Dr. Jaishankar discussed expanding bilateral trade and cooperation in the field of agriculture, pharmaceuticals, electronics, e-mobility, defence and atomic energy with his Argentinean counterpart.

“A productive meeting with FM @SantiagoCafiero of Argentina on his first visit to India. Discussed expanding our bilateral trade and cooperation in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, electronics,e-mobility, defence & atomic energy. Will work closely in G20 and multilateral forums,” Dr. Jaishankar tweeted.

Dr Jaishankar and V Muraleedharan, Minister of State, Ministry of External Affairs also met with visiting Nigerian Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama. Besides discussing trade, the two sides identified a few areas for expansion of cooperation including health, infrastructure, education, agriculture and capacity building.

“Pleased to meet FM @GeoffreyOnyeama of Nigeria this evening. Agreed to expand our development partnership focusing on health, infrastructure, education, agriculture and capacity building. Also spoke of more trade and investments,” Dr. S Jaishankar said in a tweet.

The Argentinean and Nigerian Foreign Ministers are in the capital to attend the three-day Raisina Dialogue that will start on April 25.
