JAMMU: Two Jaish-e-Muhammad terrorists from Pakistan were killed while an officer of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) lost his life in an encounter on Friday morning in Sunjwan area of Jammu where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit on Sunday, April 24.

Officials said one of the terrorists had worn a suicidal vest and had planned a ‘fidayeen’, or suicide attack in the city.

The encounter between security forces and terrorists erupted near Sunjwan Army cantonment after police and paramilitary forces cordoned off the area on specific inputs of the presence of terrorists.

An assistant sub-inspector of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), SP Patel was killed during the gunfight. Four CISF personnel were injured in the encounter in the night, officials said.

J&K Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh said that the terrorists were planning a major attack with the aim to inflict maximum casualties on security forces.

“Terrorists opened fire on a bus of CISF when they were moving towards the encounter spot,” officials said, adding that CISF personnel retaliated effectively.

Five security forces personnel sustained injuries in the morning when a terrorist threw a grenade from an Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL).

Police Head Constable Balraj Singh of Kathua, SPO Sahil Sharma of Akhnoor, CISF’s Parmod Patra of Odisha and Amir Soran of Assam were among those injured in the gunfight between the security forces and terrorists.

Earlier Mukesh Singh, ADGP, Jammu Zone, had said that there were specific inputs that terrorists were planning to “do something” and based on it, a cordon was launched, and “there was firing”.

“Till now two (terrorists) have been killed. Two AK-47 rifles, arms and ammunition, satellite phones (besides) some documents were recovered,” the ADGP said, adding, “It seems like they were ‘fidayeen’ attackers. Operation is underway.”

PM Modi is scheduled to arrive in Jammu on Sunday in his first visit to Jammu & Kashmir after abrogation of Article 370.

PM Modi will address a major rally which will be attended by thousands of panchayat members at Palli village, 17 kilometers away from the encounter spot.

Ahead of the visit, a high alert has been sounded, and round the clock patrolling is being carried out by security forces to prevent any terrorist attack across Jammu and Kashmir.

Terrorists had sneaked into the Sunjwan military station twice in the past — 2018 and 2003 — killing soldiers and civilians.
